If it's positive, then the benefi ts are tenfold, but often that's not the case and young people are reduced to bleak statistics. They need to feel that there is a place for them in society where they are valued and can give back. Q: How did you get to where you are today?A:I read a lot. At school, I was terrible at maths and science, but books offered me a sanctuary and fostered my love of words. Q: What issues did you face growing up?A:My mum was bipolar and suffered from addiction problems. As we learn more about mental illness and addiction, it becomes so much less isolating, but I remember as a teenager fi nding it very painful and often feeling embarrassed. Q: Why do you support young people?A:I know from experience what a difference it makes when you are young and someone nurtures your interest in something, or takes the time to really listen.
