. The construction industry in Yorkshire & The Humberwas the hardest hit in the first year of the recession,with a real decline in output of just under 11% in2008. With a decline in excess of 18% between 2007and 2010, Cebr predict a real decline in the industry'sGVA contribution to the region of 11%.. The volume of new housing fell by 27% in 2008 andby 45% in 2009. The 13% increase in new housingconstruction recorded in 2010 was driven by a 52%increase in public housing. Private housing increasedby less than 5% in 2010. . The volume of new infrastructure fell by 10% in 2008,before increasing by 82% in 2009 and again in 2010by 6%.. Employment in construction has fallen steadily byabout 6% in each year of the 2008-10 period. The first half-year's data so far reports a 3% increasein 2011.. The sector accounted for 7.0% of the region'sworkplace GVA in 2008, significantly greater thanthe UK's 6.4%.. The total contribution to regional GVA stood at£15,729m in 2010. The corresponding regionalmultiplier is 91.8% of the UK-wide multiplier,meaning that about 8.2% of the impact of theconstruction sector in Yorkshire & The Humber isfelt elsewhere in the UK. . The construction sector accounted for 7.0% ofworkforce jobs in 2011, down from a high of 7.7%in 2007.. A total 278,966 FTE jobs were supported byconstruction activity throughout Yorkshire & TheHumber in 2011, compared to the 328,520supported in 2007.. The construction sector comprised 20,135enterprises in 2011, 20,115 of which were SMEs.
