All That Heaven Allows13John Michael McDonagh/Ireland/UK/2011/96 minCast: Brendan Gleeson, Don Cheadle, Mark Strong, Liam Cunningham, David Wilmot, Dominique McElligotWED 15 JUNE 21:45 FESTIVAL THEATRE - MAIN AUDITORIUMPRICE: £15.00 (£9.50 CONC)Sgt. Gerry Boyle is an undistinguished officer of the Galway Garda. But only because he wants it that way .Confrontational, vulgar, hooker-frequenting, heavy-drinking, contraband pill-popping Sgt. Gerry Boyle could be said to not take his job very seriously. Onto his country beat comes polar opposite FBI Agent Wendell Everett (Don Cheadle), on the trail of some unlikely international drug dealers on the West Coast of Ireland. Content, at first, to ridicule (hilariously) the straight-laced G-Man, our 'hero' finds himself reluctantly drawn into the action, and an improbable alliance, of a very particular sort, is born.In Bruges would be the obvious comparison here (both films are Irish, star Brendan Gleeson, were brilliantly written and directed by a member of the McDonagh family, and share a delicious, caustic wit as black as Guinness) but this fish-out-of-water/odd couple/cop comedy/buddy movie is much more besides: it's also a clever, original character study with a downright melancholy sweetness about it that's decidedly not present in the earlier film. All that said, this is Gleeson's film. He is so good, it is almost like it was written for him.The GuardTHE GUARDOPENING NIGHTUK PREMIEREopening nighteasyJet are proud to sponsor the 2011 Edinburgh International Film Festival10812650.9235-EJ-Edinburgh FF Strips v3.indd 106/05/2011 17:35
