Growing numbers of businesses and homes are subscribing to WiSpire, a joint venture between the Diocese of Norwich and Thorpe St Andrew-based internet service provider FreeClix, which guarantees six megabytes per second download speed with one megabyte upload speed broadband. Now Broadland District Council is investigating supporting similar projects at other churches in its area in a bid to solve the problem of internet access "not spots" in rural areas. WiSpire has identified more than 500 church towers in Norfolk which would be suitable rural locations to deliver high-speed broadband to village communities poorly served by existing providers. Broadland council's head of economic development, Chris Hill said: "We all know that the lack of fast, reliable wireless access is holding back many small companies based in rural areas. "Having seen the Postwick project in action we are actively looking at whether the council can help establish WiSpire antenna on other churches within our footprint. It would provide a massive boost to the rural economy and allow businesses operating from villages and market towns the ability to compete with their urban rivals. "We are trying to identify the best churches in Broadland capable of serving a number of communities, covering thousands of residents and commercial operations, and finally providing a mechanism to plug those signal gaps." Broadland's investigation into Wireless possibilities came as Culture Minister Ed Vaizey praised local authorities showing enthusiasm for rolling out superfast broadband. Under the scheme, the broadband signal is beamed from FreeClix data centre, via an intermedia http://www.wispire.co.uk/ry site to the receiving church tower, and from there to a wireless receiver attached the subscriber's home, office or factory. The service - which costs about £25 a month to users - boosts internet speeds to at least six mbps within a five kilometre radius of the church. Leased lines, providing bespoke services to firms needing bigger bandwidth options are also available. FreeClix joint managing director Steve Batson said WiSpire's network has been designed to complement Norfolk County Council's "Say Yes to Better Broadband" campaign to get people to sign up for faster speeds in order to make it worthwhile for a major broadband provider to improve services in the county.WiSpire's scheme was viable with as few as 20-25 subscribers per church, he said..
