4243Would you like to see more green initiatives at your university?Barely a week goes by that a university marketing department does not report a new green initiative or the construction of a particularly sustainable building on campus. However, if they think this is the way to students' hearts, they may be mistaken. More than half of undergraduates said they did not want to see more green initiatives at their university (56% did not). Women were a little more interested in eco-friendliness than men (46% said they wanted more green initiatives, compared with 40% of male students), as were students at traditional universities, where 48% of students were keen, than those at newer institutions, where the figure was 40%.What, if anything, do you recycle when you are at university? While most students did not want more green initiatives, the findings relating to recycling demonstrate that the majority do try to do their bit for the environment and is increasing each year.Almost three quarters of students recycled plastic bottles (72% did), while most also recycled card (71%), cans (65%) and glass (52%). However, those who took the trouble to recycle other plastic products were in the minority (just under one in three did), as were those who recycled food waste (22%) and clothes (8%). Women were slightly more likely than men to recycle in almost all of the categories, as were those at traditional universities. Those in catered halls were less likely than the average student to recycle, perhaps because of a lack of facilities, while those in self-catered halls, flats and houses were among the most diligent on this front. Asked to rate their university's recycling facilities, six out of 10 students (59%) said they were adequate, while a quarter (24%) said they were not and the remainder did not know. This has increased since 2010 when 46% of students thought there were sufficient recycling facilities.15% think better social facilities would improve the student experience 4243If your university had more money to spend on improving the 'student experience', what would you most like it to invest in?With tuition fees set to treble at many universities in England in 2012-13, institutions up and down the country are promising to invest more in the student experience. However, what students want more than anything is not expensive new buildings or flashy sporting facilities, but improvements in the quality of teaching. A fifth of students (20%) chose this as their key concern, more than for any other option. In second place was better social facilities such as bars, clubs and student union facilities, which was chosen by 15%, followed by improvements to lecture halls and laboratories (the choice of 14%). Smaller numbers of students wanted investment in the quality of accommodation (which was the priority for 11%), library facilities (10%) and IT facilities (9%). However, the most visible improvements that are often on the front of university prospectuses were also of the least interest to students - just 6% said they wanted better sporting facilities, while even fewer (4%) hoped for more attractive 'designer' buildings.Improvements to the quality of teachingBetter social facilities, such as bars, clubs and student union facilitiesImprovements to lecture halls and laboratoriesMore attractive designer buildings on campusBetter student accommodationBetter sporting facilitiesLibrary facilities/opening hoursIT facilitiesBetter e-learning20%9%15%14%11%6%4%10%What would help improve the student experience9% |
