birds, butterflies & wildlifeFrom river-valleys at almost sea-level toalpine habitats in the high mountains,the Picos de Europa are home to awealth of animal-life. The graceful andagile 'rebeco' (or chamois) are often seenon higher slopes. Roe deer dart throughthe woodlands, where you might also seered squirrels. The marten, wild cat, stoat,otter, fox, badger, polecat and weasel willbe seen by the more alert amongst you. Evidence of wild boars is common butsightings are very rare - but not as rare,however, as sightings of the Cantabrianbrown bear!Golden eagles are regular visitors to theskies but it is more common to see theEgyptian and Griffon vultures riding themid-day thermals. The crimson wingedwallcreeper remains elusive but youmight see one on the remoter rock-facesof the national park. Of course, theubiquitous alpine choughs will loitercheekily at mountain refuges or knownpicnic spots. The cast list will alsohopefully include the black woodpecker,middle spotted woodpecker, treecreeper,snow finch, alpine accentor, eagle owland peregrine.Butterflies abound here, particularly inthe lower wildflower meadows. It was carved out of thecliff faces of the western walls of thegorge with a series of bridges andtunnels during the 1920's while buildinga 12km water canal for a hydro-electricstation in Poncebos. It is a 90 minutedrive to the start of the walk but thisunique and fascinating gorge is wellworth the trip.fuente déAnother weekly feature of our organisedwalks is Fuente Dé. A dramatic cable car ascent whiskswalkers between Fuente Dé and ElCable, perched precariously at 1800m inthe central massif with its expansiveviews south across the CordilleraCantabrica. From here there are optionsfor both medium and high level walkersand you cannot fail to be captivated atevery turn by the awe-inspiring scenery.Our walks are likely to either climbtowards the Horcada Rojos with itsawesome views of the signature peak ofNaranjo de Bulnes, or we will headtowards the historic Chalet Real and thegentian covered alpine meadows whichsurround Refugio Aliva, beforemeandering down to the idyllicmountain village of Mogrovejo.39 |
