where the mountains meet the seaThe Cordillera Cantabrica, of which the Picosde Europa form a part, separates the highdry plains of central Spain from the dramaticlush green northern coast of the Bay ofBiscay, the Costa Verde. Indeed, these mountains are so close to theocean that according to legend, the Picos deEuropa (literally the 'Peaks of Europe') gottheir name from trans-Atlantic sailorsapproaching northern Europe from the newworlds of the Americas. Today, most of the region is protected by thePicos de Europa National Park. This centres on a compact and beautifulrange of high limestone mountains, whichrise up gloriously from the coast and arecrowned by soaring peaks. In many ways, this gem of a range matches step for stepthe colours and natural drama of theDolomites. The range consists of three major massifs:Central, Eastern and Western. The Centraland Western massifs are separated by theinspirational, mile-deep Cares Gorge (theGarganta del Cares). With Collett's, you willhave the opportunity to walk in this naturalphenomenon at least once during your stay.Culturally, the area is rich, vibrant andtraditional. It is famed, amongst otherthings, for its cider and its piquant bluecheeses, which is traditionally matured inlocal caves.36
