Based at a hostel in the shadow of the vertiginous granite towers, spend three days exploring the lagoons, iceberg-dotted rivers and snow-white glaciers. The park teems with wildlife: guanacos, condors, eagles, silver fox and even puma may be spotted. Optional boat trip to Glacier Grey, and/or walks to the Valle Francés or to the base of the towers.Day 8 Private bus journey to El Calafate in Argentina?located on the tawny shores of the vast, turquoise Lago Argentino. Continue to Perito Moreno Glacier, 1km across and higher than a tower block. Using wooden walkways, we can get up close to its massive walls from which huge cathedrals of ice calve into the lake below. Day 9 Optional day trip with the choice of a boat trip to the ice field, an estancia visit or horse-riding around Lago Argentino. Day 10 Drive to El Chaltén in the Fitz Roy range. Walk to the foot of Cerro Torre.Day 11 Visit the Laguna de los Tres, 2000m above which towers Mount Fitz Roy, or take a short walk to the waterfall. Optional ice trekking on Lago Viedma. To see El Chaltén on a clear day was truly 'awesome'.
