BAUDER MEMBRANE COLOUR OPTIONSThe Bauder Thermoplan and Thermofol single ply membranes each come in two colour options to suit the most popular preferences of specifiers for buildings constructed in today's market.Mechanical Fastening or Adhered SystemsAs with the insulation, the two main types of attachment methods can be adopted with the membrane itself. However to complicate matters a combination of the two types of attachment can be found is some systems dependant on deck type, aesthetic requirement, commercial consideration or project specifics.A general guide can be given here, but early discussion with your Bauder area technical manager can ensure the correct details for a specific project build up.Adhered SystemsThis option can be used effectively when the structural decking is either difficult to mechanically fasten into, or the use of fasteners will compromise the air leakage or internal aesthetics of the project. The adhered system can be used with either a fleece backed membrane or the standard non fleece backed membrane. Adhered systems still require an amount of mechanical restraint installed around the perimeter of the roof area, which is designed to assist in the resistance of wind uplift. The finished appearance of an adhered system is generally less wrinkled than that of a mechanically fastened system as the membrane is fully restrained over the whole roof surface, however the appearance will of course be affected by the substrate it is being installed on to.Mechanically FastenedThis option is generally used on most decking types, metal and timber being the most common. A concrete deck with a high proportion of stone can be difficult to mechanically fasten to, though it is possible if no other option is suitable. If this type of system is selected then consideration should be given to the aesthetic appearance of the protruding fasteners on the underside of the structural decking. The inclusion of an internal ceiling readily solves this issue.Mechanical fastening provides a fast safe and effective method of membrane attachment, but it is always recommended to undertake a wind uplift calculation to BS 6399 part 2 to ensure the correct fastener density is specified. Our technical department can provide these calculations within a project specification. Mechanical fastening is not affected by the ambient weather conditions or temperature and is therefore suitable for installation all year round.Fasteners Bauder requires that any fasteners used are tested and approved to UEAtc guidelines. Within our Thermoplan system we require the use of a tube and screw type fastener for both the attachment of the membrane and insulation. These types of fasteners provide a thermal brake in the system and reduce the transfer of heat from inside to out and are therefore far more thermally efficient than a standard type of fastener. For fasteners used in conjunction with our Thermofol system we recommend the use of tube and screw fasteners with guidance sought from the specialist supplier. Bauder only approves fasteners if they are supplied by companies who are associate members of the Single Ply Roofing Association (SPRA) and maintain that the performance of the fasteners selected must equal the total required by the whole system. 61 bauder.co.ukAdvantages of MECH FIX Disadvantages of MECH FIXCalculated to BS6399 Concrete needs pre-drillingFast track installation Membrane can tent or bagNot affected by adverse weather Fasteners visible on undersideor temperature of deckPRODUCTSilver GreyPearl WhiteLight GreyBlue GreyAnthraciteThermofolThermoplanDESCRIPTIONRAL NUMBERAdvantages of Adhered Disadvantages of AdheredNon penetration of vapour barrier Weather dependantNo internal aesthetic issues Cost and time of installationMembrane is fully restrained over Reduced possibilities of recyclingroof surfaceTECHNICALGUIDE70011013703570317016 SURFACE PROTECTIONbauder.ie62The life expectancy of a flat roof system is extended if it incorporates an aesthetic finish which provides protection of the membrane from the natural elements. This includes finishes such as ballast, paving or an extensive green roof.BALLASTED OR PAVEDThis particular finish is ideal where regular access is required such as on a roof terrace. It is also specified where wind uplift is a risk as the membrane is loose-laid and then held on the deck by the weight of the ballast or paving. If this type of surface protection is to be incorporated, it needs to be considered at the design stage as provision needs to be made for the supporting structural deck and the associated cost implications.WALKWAYS Clearly identified walkways should be installed from roof access points to areas of plant and equipment. Walkway material should be considered for use on all areas likely to carry foot traffic. Bauder walkway materials have a specially embossed anti slip finish as well as being a distinctive colour. Working platforms may be created by placing coated flat metal sheet on the surface of the insulation and mechanically fastened to the deck. The area should be waterproofed in the normal way and then walkway material placed onto the surface of the waterproofing and hot air welded into place.EXTENSIVE GREEN ROOFCreating an extensive green roof as a surface protection gives many environmental benefits and helps to mask the building into its surroundings, particularly if it is positioned in areas sensitive to construction. It uses low maintenance, frost and wind hardy vegetation, such as sedum plants. The roof is lightweight and cost effective, though it is not suitable for recreational use and should only be accessed for routine maintenance.Sedum Blanket Retention Spikes and SS40 TrimWhen single ply is used on sloped roofs over 5º with our Xeroflor sedum blanket it is necessary to install a Bauder retention spike system. The retention spikes are installed on to the top surface of the single ply membrane by a cover strap of membrane which is part welded through the large holes on the horizontal leg of the retention spike which is sat directly on to the surface of the membrane. On mechanically fastened single ply systems, a secondary line of fasteners is required between the two rows of fasteners within the side laps of the membrane sheets. This line of fasteners is positioned in the centre of the membrane sheet and runs at 90º to the retention spikes. These additional lines of fasteners must have a cover strap installed over them to provide weathering. This additional attachment is not required on adhered systems. When Bauder SS40 retention trim is required, it is installed onto the surface of the membrane and held in position by welding a cover strap of membrane through the large holes on the horizontal leg of the retention trim, which is sat directly on to the surface of the membrane.Extensive SubstrateExtensiveVegetation Paving SlabBallastDecking on Paver PadsDecking on Timber BearersT-SV 15 FSM 600llPF300llU15llFSM 600PF300FSM 600FSM 600U20llFSM 600PF300FSM 600FSM 600VllFSM 600PF300FSM 600FSM 600T-SV 12 FSM 600llPF300llT-SV 18 FSM 600llPF300llT-SV 20 FSM 600llPF300llT-SV FBFSM 600llPF300llTHERMOFOLl = not suitablel = suitable without the need for additional protection layerPF = Protection FleeceTHERMOPLAN |
